Migration Acceleration Program

01 - The challenge

The challenge

The use of cloud computing and digitalization is a prerequisite for improving the efficiency of business operations, the ability to adapt to market changes, the development of elasticity agility and optimal cost structures.

The ability of businesses to digitise is fundamentally determined by the appropriate use of cloud computing services and technologies to modernise business processes. The key points are:

  • scalability
  • agility
  • cost savings, cost optimalization
  • high availability
  • high levels of security and compliance
  • continuous improvement, innovation
  • global service availability
  • devops and automation capability

Successful migration is based on a well thought-out, well-planned migration process that not only improves the technology, but also the organisation, processes and operations. This requires not only expertise, but also methodological knowledge and the professional use of appropriate frameworks and tools.

This is certainly a challenge for companies, as summarised below:

  • The complexity of migration: companies have complex IT landscapes that include classic-traditional systems, applications and large amounts of data. Migrating such a complex environment to the public cloud can be challenging and requires careful planning and coordination.
  • Data transfer and bandwidth: migrating large amounts of data from on-premises systems to the cloud can be time-consuming and bandwidth-intensive. Enterprise organisations need to take into account the logistics of data transfer, network capacity and consciously plan ahead for potential downtime in the migration process.
  • Application compatibility: not all applications can be easily migrated to the cloud, as it depends on the specific hardware, operating system or software configuration. Enterprises may need to reconfigure or redesign applications to take advantage of the services offered by the cloud environment.
  • Security and compliance: as enterprises move to the public cloud, they need to address security requirements. Ensuring privacy, implementing access control (possibly zero trust) and compliance with regulatory requirements are critical challenges. - Cost management: while the public cloud offers almost limitless scalability and cost benefits, managing the cost of the cloud will require conscious planning, measurement and optimisation for enterprises.
  • Knowledge gaps and training: the transition to public cloud computing requires specific knowledge and expertise. Organisations may face skills gaps in their IT teams due to lack of experience and understanding of cloud technologies. Training and upskilling of staff or hiring external experts can help overcome this challenge.
  • Performance and reliability: businesses need to ensure that migrated systems and applications work optimally in the cloud environment. They need to consider factors such as network latency, data access speed and redundancy to maintain or improve performance and reliability.
  • Governance: following migration, enterprises should establish governance policies and oversight mechanisms to maintain control over their cloud resources. This includes monitoring resource usage, managing access controls and putting in place appropriate governance frameworks to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.

The solution

Tackling these challenges requires careful planning, collaboration between different stakeholders, and leveraging best practices and expertise in cloud migration. TC2, as an official AWS Migration Competency Partner, is qualified to use the AWS best practice methodology, framework and tools to professionally deliver a migration service, broken down into appropriately phased planning and implementation phases. At the same time, TC2, as an AWS Migration Competency Partner, is entitled to use the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP) rebates and credits to reduce the cost of implementation and maintenance of its customers’ migration projects.

In TC2's MAP program, the migration process is broken down into three main phases:

  • Developing a business case (Assess phase): based on the migration maturity of the organisation and the infrastructure assessed using the so-called "agent/agentless" tools (the migration strategy to be chosen is not defined at this stage, so we calculate here with the so-called "lift & shift" migration strategy), we scale an AWS platform and provide the expected AWS costs for the next three years, the projected cost of migration and we also perform a TCO calculation using a machine learning-enabled tool. This allows our customers to decide whether to embark on the migration process.
  • (Mobilize phase) Full migration of selected sample applications to provide the organization with a full migration result and experience. This is the phase that determines the company's ability to develop a migration plant with TC2 in a Proof-of-Concept.
  • Based on the successful outcome of the previous - Mobilize phase, the so-called mass migration (MIgrate & Modernize phase) will be started and the migrated applications will be modernized. The latter may mean continuous optimisation of the platform and refactoring of the application (depending on the migration strategy).

The main values and tools of the TC2 MAP:

  • Migration methodology: the AWS MAP provides a structured migration methodology known as the Cloud Adoption Framework (CAF). It helps organizations assess their current state, determine the appropriate migration strategy, plan the migration, and execute the migration process. The CAF serves as a guide and provides best practices, templates and checklists to ensure a successful migration.
  • Migration Readiness Assessment: the AWS MAP offers a Migration Readiness Assessment (MRA) to help organisations assess their readiness for migration. The MRA provides an in-depth analysis of the organization's current environment, identifies potential challenges and recommends mitigation strategies to optimize the migration process.
  • Migration tools and automation: the AWS MAP provides a set of migration tools such as AWS Server Migration Service (SMS), AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) and AWS Migration Center to automate and simplify the migration process. These tools help reduce manual effort, ensure data integrity and minimize downtime during migration.
  • Cost Optimization: the AWS MAP provides tools and resources to help organizations optimize costs during and after migration. AWS Cost Explorer provides cost visibility and forecasting capabilities so organizations can estimate and optimize their cloud spend.
  • raining and certification: during the planning and implementation of the migration project, we also provide our customers with hands-on expertise, because TC2 is interested in ensuring that our customers' pool of experts is able to operate, develop and optimise the AWS platform themselves.

Thus, through its AWS MAP program, TC2 provides methodologies and tools for planning and implementation, training and support to help organizations streamline and accelerate their migration to AWS. TC2’s MAP Program methodology, tools and expertise help organizations plan, implement and optimize their migration to more quickly and efficiently realize the benefits of AWS.
