The SAP name is familiar to everyone and plays a key role in the management of several large companies. SAP systems manage critical information for the business - think of, for example, manufacturing, suppliers, or payroll data - the continuous availability of these systems and the integrity of the data are one of the main aspects of operation. Against this background, in the traditional premise operating environment, many years of appropriate hardware capacity should be planned, scaled up in time, a suitable Disaster Recovery site should be built and the security conditions to be provided. How is this model different in the cloud and how can AWS deliver more to SAP workloads than other providers?
AWS is the first cloud provider, which also means having the most sophisticated technology and operating processes. The largest service provider in the public cloud market, accordingly, has the highest capacity. With SAP, you can now look back at a 10-year-old common past that has brought a lot of innovation over time. The main steps of the SAP-AWS alliance are clearly visible from the beginning. In 2008, SAP as a customer started using the AWS platform. From the SAP Global Technology Partner status in 2011, fast cooperation was started. In 2012 SAP HANA software was certified for Production workloads in AWS. By 2016, the AWS platform has been certified for a number of SAP software solutions and configurations. In the last two years, deeper technical-level collaboration is also visible - the so-called FAST automated migration tool for migration to AWS, SAP GUI streaming solutions, API level integrations, which make the two vendor's features outstanding.
The pay-as-you-go billing model is one of the great achievements of the cloud, we can get the resources right away, or even stop them if not production, resulting in significant savings. Globally-built infrastructure, due to the complete independence of each region, provides a good Disaster Recovery strategy with strong cost-effectiveness. AWS Datacenters fulfill many authentication, certification of major industries and are constantly being reviewed in accordance with the latest requirements. Think about the compliance of services with GDPR compliance, ISO certifications, or, if necessary, insurance or financial sector specific certifications. Along with the basic IaaS components, the platform features a host of other automated services that support the self-drive of operations, Disaster Recovery, migration, and other areas. In the case of AWS infra-costs calculated over a given period, it is important to note that AWS continuously updates the server hardware over a period of 3-5 years, replacing newer models, resulting in significant cost reductions for the companies, as this burden was removed by AWS .
